EDF installs OpenHydro turbine
First 500kW tidal turbine deployed at Paimpol-Brehat site off Brittany
EDF has today installed the first of two 500kW OpenHydro tidal turbines to be deployed by the French utility at its Paimpol-Brehat site in Brittany.
The turbine was installed using a dedicated barge designed by OpenHydro’s parent company DCNS, the French shipbuilder. The barge allowed the turbine to be installed in under an hour, it said.
Once stabilized, the barge was used to place the tidal turbine on the seabed at a 35-metre depth via a system of innovative winches with hydraulic motors. EDF said the turbine was installed “in record time” with no civil works necessary.
The operation involved 20 DCNS and OpenHydro employees.
The 16-metre diameter turbine arrived at the Ploubazlanecon deployment site from the port of Brest on 17 January.
The next step is to connect the OpenHydro turbine to the grid via a subsea converter made by GE.
