New England weighs green bids
Utility companies to select successful proposals by late July
Utility officials are sifting through more than two dozen bids submitted to a New England clean energy solicitation for 600MW.
Electric distribution companies in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island jointly issued the request for proposals, which includes wind, solar, small hydro, biomass, fuel cells and large-scale hydro built after 1 January 2003.
International and US developers such as EDP Renewables, EverPower, NextEra, RES Americas and SunEdison filed several proposals for projects in the region.
Solar bids include a proposal by offshore wind outfit Deepwater Wind for the 26.4MW Simsbury scheme in Connecticut.
Hydro Quebec has two proposals in the mix to supply electricity from existing hydro projects in Canada.
The utilities expect to select the winning bids by late July and aim to get regulatory approval by the end of the year.
