UK joins tidal hydro gang
200GWh a year plant located on River Wyre near Fleetwood
Natural Energy Wyre has launched of the UK’s first tidal hydro energy plant at Fleetwood on the country’s northwest coast.
The £300m plant is located at the mouth of the River Wyre, which flows into Morecambe Bay and experiences tidal ranges of more than 10 metres on spring tides.
It converts energy four times a day with each tidal movement using hydropower technology and specially developed power conversion electronics.
The plant is expected to produce over 200GWh of electricity a year, with an expected lifespan of more than 125 years, the company said.
It added that the technology used at the plant is comparable to that used by projects in other parts of the world, including Brazil, France, South Korea and Russia.
