Orkney open for tidal bids
Pre-qualification notice published for 25.3MW Churchill Barriers scheme
Orkney Islands Council has published a pre-qualification notice for the concession to develop a tidal project at the Churchill Barriers.
Pre-qualified parties will be put forward to a competitive process for the contract award for the design, construction, operation and financing of the scheme.
Orkney Islands Council is eyeing a 16.7MW tidal project at Barrier No.1 and 8.6MW development at Barrier No.2.
Options for the Churchill Barriers, which were built during the Second World War to stop enemy submarines entering Scapa Flow, include installing turbines in culverts or modify the barriers into a bridge and hanging turbines off a deck.
Bidders have until 5 October to register their interest.
Developers will be notified around two months after the publication of the pre-qualification notice, reNEWS understands.
The selection of the most suitable project and subsequent award of the concession could take up to two years due to parallel consenting work with Marine Scotland.
