Tesla ramps up battery output
Mass production of lithium-ion cells starts at Nevada facility
Tesla and Panasonic have started the mass production of lithium-ion battery cells at the so-called Gigafactory in Nevada.
The cylindrical 2170 cell was jointly designed and engineered by the two companies and will be used in Tesla’s Powerwall 2 and Powerpack 2 energy storage products.
The factory (pictured), which is being built in stages, will produce 35GWh/year of lithium-ion battery cells and employ 6500 people when fully complete, the partners said.
They added that when production ramps up the cost of the batteries is expected to fall “significantly” due to increasing automation and process design.
