Brigitte Zypries has been appointed Germany’s energy and economics minister, replacing Sigmar Gabriel who is now the country’s foreign minister.

Zypries, a 63-year-old Social Democrat, was previously a junior minister in the economics and energy ministry mainly in charge of digital policy, start-ups and industrial policy.

She also served as the country’s minister of justice from 2002 to 2009.

Zypries is regarded as a transitional appointment, because she has previously announced plans to step down from federal politics after the autumn elections.

She is not expected to push for any major energy policy changes in the run-up to the elections.
