Atlantis turbine feeds grid
MeyGen 1A milestone as first power from AR1500
Atlantis Resources has exported power from its AR1500 tidal turbine at the MeyGen 1A project in the Pentland Firth off the north coast of Scotland.
The company said the 1.5MW machine designed by Lockheed Martin had “successfully exported power to the grid and has operated at full power”.
“The AR1500 is one of the most technologically advanced tidal turbines ever deployed on a commercial scale marine power project,” said Atlantis.
It added the tidal stream turbine "was successfully deployed in less than 60 minutes following earlier connection of its proprietary wet mate connection management system, which allows for rapid deployment and retrieval".
First power from MeyGen’s initial Andritz Hydro Hammerfest turbine was produced in November 2016. All four of the turbines in Phase 1A have now been installed and connected to the grid onshore at a control building at Ness of Quoys in Caithness.
Construction for the 6MW second phase of the MeyGen project — known as 1B — is due to commence later this year.
