Siemens has signed a partnership with US company SkySpecs to deploy its automated drone technology for onshore and offshore wind turbine inspections.

The companies aim to develop a so-called push-button inspection system that is faster, repeatable and more efficient than existing methods.

Fully automated drone inspections will lower operating costs while potentially increasing the efficiency and lifespan of wind turbines, they said.

Siemens plans to refine SkySpecs' drone technology and prepare it commercial readiness.

The technology will allow the German company to add more advanced preventive maintenance techniques as well as significant data that can provide insight into asset lifespans or failure causes, it said.

"The autonomous drone technology supports our Digitalization at Wind initiative in generating high-quality field data about the condition of our wind turbines,” Siemens Wind Power chief technology officer Ruediger Knauf said.

“This is particularly valuable for our offshore business, where completing inspections quickly, safely and cost effectively is of critical importance.”
