Marine has '300GW potential'
Ocean Energy Systems report estimates 680,000 jobs up for grabs
A report by Ocean Energy Systems (OES) predicts wave and tidal has a potential global installed capacity of at least 300GW by 2050.
The ‘International Vision for Ocean Energy’ report estimates marine could create 680,000 direct jobs and save 500 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by the same year.
Recent modelling suggests the rate of growth seen in offshore wind in the last 20 years will be reproduced in ocean energy between 2030 and 2050, OES said.
The majority of ocean energy technologies are currently at the conceptual or prototype stages, and finds that growth of the sector over the last 15 years has been slower than predicted, it added.
OES is an intergovernmental collaboration between countries operating under a framework established by the International Energy Agency.
