Sumitomo Electric and SDG&E pilot redox flow system in California
San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) is partnering with Sumitomo Electric to develop a 2MW energy storage pilot project in California.
The four-year scheme will see SDG&E research Sumitomo’s vanadium redox flow battery system, with the aim of integrating more renewable energy and increasing grid flexibility.
SDG&E said it will be testing voltage frequency, power outage support and shifting energy demand.
SDG&E chief operating officer Caroline Winn said: “This pilot will advance our understanding of how this flow battery technology can help us increase the reliable delivery of clean energy to our customers and align with state and local carbon emission reduction goals.”
