MHI Vestas eyes US expansion
Co-CEO Tetsushi Mizuno says market could be a ‘game changer’ for energy
MHI Vestas is eyeing significant growth opportunities in the US offshore wind market in the next couple of years, according to company co-chief executive Tetsushi Mizuno.
Mizuno said in an opinion piece for Forbes that the US New England coastline could “very well become a game changer for energy generation” with project development accelerating by 2020 and a “serious escalation” after 2025.
Current legislation makes Massachusetts the state with the biggest opportunities at the moment, but “there is significant untapped potential stretching from Maine to Maryland,” he said.
However, a successful US offshore industry will require bipartisan political backing and market support structures, Mizuno said.
MHI Vestas is already the preferred supplier of V126 3.45MW turbine for the Icebreaker wind farm on Lake Erie, he noted.
Mizuno added that the company is also looking at offshore wind expansion in Japan and Taiwan.
