Van Oord has contracted Damen Shiprepair at Schiedam to upgrade the offshore wind installation vessel Aeolus.

The modifications will increase the vessel’s loading capacity by installing sponsons, strengthening the deck and enlarging the spud cans, Van Oord said.

A new accommodation module with a helideck will increase the number of people the vessel can carry.

Lifting capacity will also rise to 1600 tonnes from 900 tonnes with the installation of a new leg-encircling crane, which has been ordered from Huisman.

“This capacity increase of the vessel will enable Van Oord to continue to install increasingly larger foundations and heavier turbines at offshore wind farms,” the company said.

The work will start in September and the upgraded vessel is scheduled to be operational in spring 2018.

Van Oord said the modification plan is in response to the “rapidly growing and changing offshore wind industry”.
