Green power tops 2TW
IRENA data shows 161GW of new capacity installed last year
Installed renewable energy capacity around the world increased by 161GW in 2016 bringing the global total to more than 2TW, according to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
Renewable energy now accounts for 8.7% of total energy capacity, IRENA said.
Some 71GW of new solar was installed last year, the first time since 2013 that the sector has outpaced wind, which increased by 51GW, the agency said.
Hydropower and bioenergy capacities increased by 30GW and 9GW respectively, while geothermal grew by just under 1GW, IRENA said.
Asia accounted for 58% of new renewable additions in 2016, and now has a total of 812GW installed or about 41% of the global capacity.
IRENA director-general Adnan Amin said: “We are witnessing an energy transformation taking hold around the world, and this is reflected in another year of record breaking additions in new renewable energy capacity.”
