Minesto green light for Welsh tidal
Natural Resources Wales issues marine license for Holyhead Deep
Natural Resources Wales has approved a marine licence application by Minesto for the installation and operation of a 500kW Deep Green tidal turbine in Holyhead Deep off the coast of Anglesey.
The now consented installation in Holyhead Deep is planned for later this year and will include a single Deep Green device, seabed foundation and a buoy moored at surface.
The company said the first commercial-scale installation of Deep Green will demonstrate its tidal kite technology ahead of plans to expand Holyhead Deep into Minesto’s first array.
Chief executive Martin Edlund said: “It’s a great achievement by everyone involved in the application process, and yet another deliverable met as we move towards commercialisation of our Deep Green power plant.”
The marine license is required for offshore construction work and deposits in UK waters.
Minesto’s environmental impact assessment, which considered the potential impacts on fisheries, marine mammals, sea birds, marine archaeology and cultural heritage as well as shipping and navigation, was found to be ‘not significant’, it said.
