Calm weather hits SSE output
2016-17 renewables generation down, investment in sector ongoing
Renewable generation at SSE was down sharply in 2016-17 on the back of a year in which there was less wind and rain than the prior period.
Total output from the wind and hydro fleet was 7955GWh, compared with 9695GWh, due to the relatively benign conditions.
Overall profit before tax at the Perth-based utility was £1.54bn, up slightly on £1.51bn in the previous year. Both figures were adjusted for a large number of exceptionals in 2015-16.
SSE said it will invest £1.7bn in the current financial year with around two-thirds of that dedicated to renewables and networks.
Current construction projects include the 173MW Clyde 2, 108MW Bhlaraidh and 225MW Stronelairg wind farms in Scotland and the 19MW Slieve Divena 2 in Northern Ireland, all onshore.
The 588MW Beatrice offshore wind farm is also under construction in the Moray Firth.
