Minesto delays Welsh tidal
500kW Holyhead Deep turbine now due in 2018, new foundation crew hired
Deployment in Wales of Swedish tidal kite developer Minesto’s first commercial scale project has slipped to 2018 following delays to foundation construction.
Minesto has appointed Welsh outfit Jones Bros to construct the gravity base foundation for the 500kW Deep Green tidal turbine to be installed at the Holyhead Deep off project off Anglesey.
Arup has been assigned the task of completing and verifying the design of the foundation.
The Deep Green tidal kite was initially scheduled to be installed this summer.
Minesto last month cancelled an earlier foundation supply contact awarded to Ocean Resource after the Stourbridge company was unable to meet its financial commitments to subcontractors, according to the Swedish company.
“The foundation design remains valid, providing great advantages in terms of functionality, logistics and economy.
"However, given the delivery time for the new foundation, Minesto has to move the installation of its unique tidal energy technology in Holyhead Deep to 2018,” the company said in a statement.
"This situation allows us to prepare and perform the upcoming installation with even greater efficiency and precision", added Minesto chief executive Martin Edlund.
