Alliant Energy plans to start construction in spring 2018 of the 300MW Upland Prairie wind farm in Iowa.

The announcement follows an agreement with developer Apex Clean Energy for the 121-turbine project in Clay and Dickinson counties in the northwest of the US state.

Alliant said local tax benefits over the lifetime of the wind farm will be over $40m, while landowner payments will amount to $45m.

Alliant Energy Iowa president Doug Kopp said: “We are bringing more clean and cost-competitive wind energy to our customers.

“If our second wind expansion project is approved, one third of our energy in Iowa will be from wind, starting in 2020.”

Alliant Energy received approval in 2016 to add up to 500MW of wind energy and has requested a similar expansion from the Iowa Utilities Board again in 2017.

Apex chief executive and president Mark Goodwin said: “Apex wind projects are designed to meet the needs of forward-thinking utilities such as Alliant Energy. We share the same priorities, especially strong community partnerships.”
