US wind blows strong
Almost 30GW of projects under construction or in advanced development
Almost 30GW of new wind projects were under construction or in advancement development in the US at the end of the third quarter of 2017, up 27% on the same period last year, according to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA).
The AWEA said in a new study – ‘The US Wind Industry Third Quarter 2017 Market Report’ – that almost 13.8GW was under construction and nearly 15.9GW in advanced development by the end of September.
In the third quarter itself, 638MW of new wind projects started construction, with 4.25GW reaching an advanced stage of development.
AWEA chief executive Tom Kiernan said: “Wind power’s value to investors, utilities and corporate purchasers is clear: fixed-cost clean energy at competitive prices.
“The high level of wind under construction and in advanced development shows we are on track to deliver 10% of America’s electricity by 2020, along with $85bn in economic activity and 50,000 new jobs.”
