US company AMSC is to supply electrical control systems for South Korean outfit Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Company’s 5.5MW offshore wind turbine.

The systems include AMSC’s PowerModule power converters, pitch and yaw converters, SCADA systems and other electronics.

The 5.5MW machine had been under joint development by Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems and AMSC, until Doosan acquired the prototype turbine, design and rights to manufacture and sell the hardware.

AMSC chief executive Daniel McGahn said: “This agreement helps us grow our market presence in both the South Korean and the growing global offshore wind market, allying AMSC with a premium global brand.”

Doosan is the engineering, procurement contractor and wind turbine supplier for the first 60MW phase of the 2.5GW Southwestern offshore wind farm in Korea.

The first phase, which is being developed by Korean Offshore Wind Power, is slated to come online in 2019.
