NKT wires wave power
1kV and 24kV cables being tested on Waves4Power device in Norway
NKT is collaborating with Swedish company Waves4Power to test new power cables on a wave energy project in Norway.
The demo will be used to examine 1kV and 24kV cables on a wave device supplied by Waves4Power.
The 1kV cable transports energy generated by a buoy with a piston to a collection hub. A transformer then increases the voltage level to 22kV and the 24kV cable exports the energy to the onshore grid.
The device has been exporting power to the Norwegian grid since June.
NKT said it has designed the cables specifically for the sector to withstand the continuous movements of the waves.
Both cables are also being tested in cooperation with Chalmers University of Technology at the high voltage test centre at the RISE institute of Sweden.
NKT executive vice president and head of applications covering low- and medium voltage cables Frida Norrbom Sams said: “We see a huge potential in the future of wave power, and as a leading power cable provider NKT naturally wishes to join the innovative companies working to develop this potential.
“NKT is committed to designing cables that will shape the future by enabling efficient and sustainable energy transmission. It is therefore a logical step for us to be a partner in this ambitious project.”
