ABB and State Grid Corp of China are ready to implement the 12GW Changji-Guquan link in China that will help to integrate remote renewable energy projects to the grid.

The companies have successfully tested an ultra high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transformer that can transmit electricity at 1100kV.

The development paves the way for the implementation of the Changji-Guquan link, which will transmit power from China’s Xinjiang region in the northwest to Anhui province in the east.

ABB has also developed and tested other components for the link, which will consist of eight 500kV and two 1000kV lines, including converter valves, brushings and DC circuit breakers. 

SGCC executive vice president Liu ZeHong said: “The Changji-Guquan +/-1,100kV project is a major technical step-up making it the world’s highest DC voltage. 

"The transformer is a key element of this link and we are pleased that the first of these landmark transformers have passed critical tests and exceeded expectations.”

The link will set a new world record in terms of voltage level, transmission capacity and distance, said ABB.
