Swedish company SciBreak has joined the Promotion consortium, which aims to develop and demonstrate three offshore grid technologies.
The technologies are diode rectifier offshore converters, an HVDC grid protection system and HVDC circuit breaker prototypes.
Promotion also aims to develop a regulatory and financial framework, including an offshore grid deployment plan for the future offshore grid system in Europe.
SciBreak was founded in 2014 to commercialise new HVDC technology for interrupting electric current.
It will participate in efforts to standardise HVDC breakers within the project and support work on mathematical models of HVDC breakers in order to create simulations to enhance system studies.
SciBreak will also contribute to the development of practices and standards for testing of HVDC breakers.
A prototype of its breaker technology will be made available for testing at DNV GL’s facilities.
The Promotion project is part of the EU’s Horizon 2020 research program.
