Iberdrola has started the assembly of the first turbine for the Gouvaes hydro plant in Portugal, which will form part of the 1.158GW Tamega complex.

Tamega will comprise three dams – Gouvaes, Alto Tamega and Daivoes – that will produce 1766 gigawatt-hours a year.

It will cost €1.5bn to build.

Construction is expected to run until 2021, Iberdrola said.
