Mexican wind to drive Volkswagen
Car giant Volkswagen has signed a deal to buy up to 130MW from a wind farm in the Mexican state of Zacatecas.
The manufacturer will purchase most of the output from Mexico Power Group’s 180MW La Bufa wind farm. The electricity will cover around 70% of demand at Volkswagen de México’s assembly facilities in Puebla and Guanajuato and save 140,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.
MPG president Gerry Monkhouse said the $350m scheme will generate 300 temporary jobs during construction and a further 60 permanent positions.
The signing of the agreement was witnessed by Mexico’s energy secretary Pedro Joaquín Coldwell (pictured), who welcomed the deal and called for greater use of renewables in the power mix.
