Dong Energy has pushed the button on the construction of the 256MW Burbo Bank 2 offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.

The project, located 8km off the UK coast in Liverpool Bay, will consist of 32 MHI Vestas V164-8MW wind turbines and is expected to be commissioned in 2017.

Dong executive vice president Samuel Leupold said: "I am very pleased that with this final investment decision we can now begin the construction of Burbo Bank 2. The construction and operation of this wind farm will support green growth and employment in the UK."

Leupold said the decision to use an 8MW wind turbine is significant step towards reducing the cost of electricity on future projects.

MHI Vestas will produce blades for the order at the recently announced production facility on the Isle of Wight in the UK.

The manufacturer said it would be the first plant "with the capacity to serial produce blades for future UK offshore projects". Work on the 80-metre units will start as soon as the second quarter of 2015.

MHI Vestas chief executive Jens Tommerup said the firm order was a milestone for the company. "We are extremely pleased to receive the first commercial order for the V164-8.0 MW, our flagship wind turbine and a machine which will contribute to driving down the cost of offshore wind energy.”

He added: “Dong Energy were closely involved in the development and testing of the turbine and the announcement represents a significant vote of confidence from the world’s leading developer of offshore wind.”

Installation of the turbines will kick off in 2016 and commissioning will be compelted in 2017. Pre-assembly of what will be the sector's largest hardware will take place in Belfast Harbour, Northern Ireland.

Burbo 2 is the first of three projects for which Dong was awarded Final Investment Decision Enabling contracts (Contract for Difference) by the UK Government in April this year.

Dong will receive a fixed price per megawatt-hour of electricity produced for the first 15 years of operation following which the project will receive the market price.
