NextEra 150MW US project denied
Stark County rejects proposal for 87-turbine development.
NextEra Energy Resources has asked North Dakota state regulators to suspend its review of the 150MW Dickinson wind project after Stark County rejected the proposal.
County commissioners voted to deny a conditional use permit in the face of local opposition to the 87-turbine development. A state Public Service Commission hearing scheduled for 18 May has been postponed indefinitely.
NextEra proposes to erect GE turbines at the 39,000-acre site located about 75 miles west of Bismarck.
The developer is trying to work out a solution to opponents’ objections, said NextEra spokesman Steven Stengel.
“We've been talking to those who support and oppose the project as well as looking at potential changes to the project layout that would address concerns expressed by commissioners.”
NextEra had asked the state to approve the project by June and planned to begin construction this summer. Basin Electric Power Cooperative has agreed to buy the output under a 30-year power purchase agreement.
